London: The Medici Society, Ltd. 1922. First edition. Octavo, original blue cloth, top edge gilt, uncut, original dust jacket. Light foxing to blank endpapers. A near-fine copy, rare in dust jacket. Item #93
First edition of this fascinating look at Marian devotion on the periphery of the Christian world. Christianity came to Ethiopia in the fourth century, planting the seeds for a distinctive Ethiopian Orthodox Church emphasizing the intercessions and miracles of the Mother of Jesus. The Legends of Our Lady, along with its companion volume, The Miracles of Our Lady, are Budge's work supplementing the Lady Meux MSS, acquired from the antiquarian book dealer Bernard Quaritch and privately published in 1899. Illustrated with frontispiece and 33 plates from Ethiopic manuscripts in the collections of the British Museum. With table of Scriptural Passages.
