'INSTAURARE OMNIA IN CHRISTO" ("RESTORE ALL THINGS IN CHRIST") First English translation of this Italian Life of Giuseppe Sarto, published to mark the canonization of St. Pius X in the Marian Year of 1954. The publisher termed this the "first complete and rigourously critical biography of the immortal pontiff," sourced from "the evidence of the witnesses consulted at the Diocesan and Apostolic Processes for the Beatification and Canonization and on the other sources enumerated in the list of documents." The book is illustrated with a frontispiece portrait and 10 photographic illustrations in addition to the handsome black-white-yellow dust jacket, (which seems to symbolize the collision between Tradition and Modernism). "Even as Pope," Pius X "retained the heart of the simple parish priest and manifested a warmth, humor, affability, and gentleness that won the hearts of pilgrims from all over the world. His most important acts as Pope were inspired by the same pastoral sense and solicitude. His love of the Mass and his desire to have it performed in the most dignified manner was embodied in his decree on the reform of sacred music (1903). Of similar inspiration was his decree urging all the faithful to frequent communion and admitting children to this sacrament at the earliest possible age." (Thomas Bokenkotter). Pius X was beatified in 1951 and canonized in May 1954 by Pope Pius XII. The canonization was a high point in Pius XII's pontificate as "he carried to new heights the almost mythical exaltation of the monarchical papacy" (Thomas Bokenkotter). Translated from the Italian by Thomas F. Murray, with his Translator's Preface, followed by a series of prefatory lists: Documents, Publications of Historic Value, Chronology of the Life of the Beatus, Eleven Years Pontificate, Beatifications and Canonization Performed by Blessed Pius X. Bokenkotter, A Concise History of the Catholic Church.
