"REMEMBER THAT YOUR HEART IS DEDICATED TO GOD" Handsome mid-century edition of this enduring work of spiritual counsel, with a frontispiece portrait of Francis de Sales. "Anyone who reads the Introduction to the Devout Life will have no difficulty in understanding its great and continuing influence. It provides the foundation for one of the recognized systems of spiritual direction in the Roman Church. In all Christian bodies, thousands have found, and still find, that this book of religious counsel is sane, wise, deeply perceptive, and unfailingly helpful" (Frank Magill). This edition, published by the Catholic Book Publishing Company, was "newly revised and corrected" by the Rev. J.M. Lelen with a brief Foreword by Rev E.J. Carney (on behalf of the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales at Catholic University). The Foreword emphasizes the broad appeal of Salesian spirituality: "stamped with a true universality that prevents its confinement to any single age or to any single individual." This edition reprints the original Preface (dated, "Annecy. The Feast of St. Mary Magdalen, 1609")—where de Sales self-deprecatingly admits: "It is true that I write about the devout life without being devout myself, though I certainly desire to be so"—in addition to an Abstract of the Life of St. Francis de Sales (from the lessons read on his festival in the Roman Breviary). Approbations, including an Imprimatur granted by Cardinal Spellman on January 29, 1952 (the Feast of Francis de Sales). Magill, Masterpieces of Christian Literature.
