"MAKE FRIENDS WITH THE SAINTS, FOR THE SAINTS ARE GOD'S FRIENDS" First edition of this exquisitely illustrated ABC—with each letter of the alphabet dedicated to a different Saint—scarce in the original case-bound boards. This alphabet, from "A" (Antony of Padua) to "Z" (Zita), is distinguished by its large format and elegant line-illustrations by Lindsay Symington, each initialed and dated in the plate and enclosed within a bold red border. The Saints depicted are: Antony - Benedict - Christopher - Dominic - Edmund - Francis of Assisi - Gregory the Great - Helen - Ignatius - Jerome - Katherine - Louis - Martin - Norbert - Odo - Philip - Quentin - Richard - Sebastian - Thomas - Ursula - Vincent of Paul - Wilfrid - Zytus - Yves - Zita. The rhymes were prepared by three authors, including Robert Hugh Benson, with a brief rhymed Preface and a Latin Dedication to Pope Pius X: "R.B. C.R. et R.H.B./ Filiolae CLARAE ANGELAE / Hoc Alphabetum dono dant / PIOQUE PAPAE DEDICANT." An illustrated colophon: "Three men with the pen and one man with the paints. Have depicted the lives of these twenty-six SAINTS." Printed by the Garden City Press for Burns Oates. Most copies appear in soft string-bound wrappers. This hardcover copy was issued without endpapers. A charming Lives of the Saints for children, unusual in this condition.
