First edition thus of Croly's pivotal work on the American experiment, edited and with an Introduction by Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. First printed in 1909, Croly's history of the dual Hamiltonian and Jeffersonian traditions in American history set the stage for Theodore Roosevelt's New Nationalism, the Progressive-era agenda of the New Republic magazine and, eventually, FDR's New Deal. This edition was part of The John Harvard Library of American classics, edited by Bernard Bailyn.
