"THIS BOOK HAS HAD FAITHFUL FRIENDS THROUGH TWO GENERATIONS" Lovely new edition of this selection of prayers, a dual-purpose devotional intended to be used in preparation before Mass or in extra-liturgical Thanksgiving outside the Mass. Originally issued with a preface by Archbishop Goodier, this revised edition contains a warm commendation by Cardinal Godfrey, Archbishop of Westminster (dated Feast of Corpus Christi, 1959), along with a brief Preface and Acknowledgements by the editor. The revision of this collection of "prayers, psalms, hymns and readings" was motivated by "the admittedly marked change in the present Eucharistic consciousness," and intended to provide a new balance and focus on the sacrificial nature of the Eucharist, long in the shadow of the sacramental nature. The text is composed of: Preface, The Asperges, Order of Mass, Prayers After Low Mass, Devotions for Holy Communion, Preparation and Thanksgivings, Prayer Before a Crucifix, Index of Sources, Index of Hymns, Index of Psalms. The text is decorated with numerous head and tailpieces and illustrated with a frontispiece and two additional plates after Albrecht Durer. Printed in Belgium and published by Burns and Oates as part of their Golden Library (so-called for the distinctive gold-foil dust jackets). This copy has a small pasted label ("Anthony Clarke Books/Wheathamstead, England) covering the Burns and Oates imprint at the foot of the title page. Approbations.
