Mount Vernon: The Peter Pauper Press, n.d. Limited edition. Small quarto, original 3/4 red morocco with patterned paper boards, top edge gilt, original paper slipcase. Book near-fine with some wear to intact original slipcase. Item #313
Handsome limited edition of the "Fioretti di San Francesco," decorated by Valenti Angelo with a title-page illustration and additional woodcuts in the text. Composed during the fourteenth-century by several different authors, the Little Flowers consists of: Flowers of St. Francis, Life of Brother Juniper, Life of the Blessed Brother Giles or Egidius, Instructions and Notable Sayings of Brother Giles. "The chief interest of The Little Flowers of Saint Francis for modern readers lies in the inspired selection of anecdotes which show the Saint in his unique moral beauty of character. He is tender without sentimentality, gentle to all—even to his enemies—and strong beneath his gentleness" (Frank Magill, Masterpieces of Christian Literature). This edition is derived from the text prepared by Antonio Cesari and translated by Thomas Okey, the first Serena Professor of Italian at the University of Cambridge. The Italian-born Angelo was a prolific and well-known children’s author, print-maker, and illustrator for decades. Founded in 1928, the Peter Pauper Press specialized in finely printed and bound letterpress volumes for the trade and special editions for publishers and institutions.
