First edition of this biography of then-Blessed Robert Southwell, by a British Jesuit. Robert Southwell and Richard Garnet came ashore on England's eastern coast in the summer of 1586. Southwell was captured, imprisoned, and tortured before he was beheaded at Tyburn in 1595. The text is composed of three sections of seven chapters apiece followed by a series of Appendixes: A. The Jesuits and the English College, B. Burghley's Memorial of 1584, C. Equivocation, D. Southwell's Publishers, 1591-1595. Southwell was beatified in 1929 and canonized by Paul VI as one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales in 1970.
