"ESPOUSING LADY POVERTY" First edition of Bishop's life of "Il Poverello," published shortly after Bishop's death in 1973. Bishop was professor emeritus and curator of the Dante and Petrarch Collections of Cornell University. "Francis was a talker, not a writer" and much of what he did write was dictated to scribes leading to the ubiquity of the legends of St. Francis. Bishop aimed to show the human flaws of Francis. With a frontispiece portrait after a painting of St. Francis by Cimabue. From Little, Brown's The Library of World Biography series, with an Introduction by J. H. Plumb, General Editor.
