"BE SILENT ABOUT GREAT THINGS...BEFORE ALL GREATNESS BE SILENT — IN ART, IN MUSIC, IN RELIGION: SILENCE"
Monte Reggio Press handbook of meditations by Friedrich von Hügel. One of only 36 copies printed in Monterey, California and illustrated with two tipped-in photographs of Baron von Hügel. Uncommon.
Von Hügel's mystical "total approach to religion" made him a mentor to spiritual writers such as Evelyn Underhill but "much of his work makes heavy reading." Selected and edited by Roger Hilleary, these passages are arranged with Biblical reflections by Paul Tyler Coke. With a brief Preface: "Bracketed with Lord Acton and Cardinal Newman as an outstanding Catholic intellectual," Von Hügel "found ways to use the best tools of modern scholarship to illuminate the traditional core of Christian doctrine."
"Thirty-six copies were printed on Wausau Vellum Opaque paper by the designer, Roger Hilleary, with the assistance of David Salinas. Hand-set Joanna types were used for the text and Perpetua for display. A folio-size Columbian handpress was used. It was manufactured by A. Seggie in Edinburgh during the 1860's. This is copy number: 19" (Colophon).
