"THE DESIRE IS TO MAKE CARMEL KNOWN AND LOVED"
Second edition of Carmel: It's History, Spirit, and Saints—published by P.J. Kenedy and Sons ("Publishers to the Holy Apostolic See"). Illustrated with a frontispiece ("Saints of Carmel") and additional plates which include portraits of Teresa of Avila, Therese of Lisieux, and John of the Cross. A bright, fresh copy with an excellent dust wrapper decorated with the Arms of the Discalced Carmelites.
First published in 1897 and offered to "friends as a Souvenir of the Opening Day" of the Carmelite Monastery in Boston (then the fourth American monastery of the Order). As the first edition of 5000 copies had "been for years exhausted," this second edition was undertaken, "considerably augmented by new matter as well as by brief mentions of the Saints, Blessed, and a few Venerables of the Order."
This edition includes the Author's Declaration and the original Preface to the First Edition ("Monastery of Mount Carmel, Boston / Feast of the Holy Name of Mary / September 12, 1897") as well as a new Preface to the Second Edition. The text consists of three sections: Part One. History, Part Two. Spirit of Carmel, Part Three. The Saints of Carmel. A brief Epilogue concludes: "And even as the life of an Order is like to the life of a soul, Carmel has known the life of its Founder after Mary." There is no Index but the subjects are "minutely indicated" in the Contents and the text is supplemented with a Bibliography. Imprimatur.
