Studies in Words
Cambridge: At the University Press, 1960. Second printing. Octavo (8 inches tall), original blue cloth, gilt black spine label. Gift inscription to blank flyleaf, blemish to lower edge. Very good indeed. Item #168
"VERBICIDE, THE MURDER OF A WORD, HAPPENS IN MANY WAYS"
Early printing of Studies in Words, derived from the lecture series ("Some Difficult Words") given by C.S. Lewis to Cambridge University students in the 1950's. Lacking the original dust jacket but printed in the same year as the first edition.
Studies in Words traces "the etymology of various terms...with a rich cargo of meaning and implication. Studies is a minor work, witty, erudite, and rarely read" (Zaleski and Zaleski). "The point of view," Lewis stresses, in a brief Preface ("C.S.L. Cambridge June 1959") "is merely lexical and historical." With an Index. Printed at the Cambridge University Press and published in September 1960. Zaleski and Zaleski. The Fellowship: The Literary Lives of the Inklings.
Price: $15.00
