"I WILL ADORN THE SHRINES OF CHRIST'S FRIENDS WITH FLOWERS, AND PLANT A GARDEN ROUND THEIR HALLOWED GRAVES"
Posthumous Edition of Christina Rossetti's Called to Be Saints—in the original "polished buckram" binding, this particular copy features a gracefully illuminated drawing by the original owner, who has also signed and dated this copy: "Robert Connell, July 1897." An excellent copy of a handsome book.
Christina Rossetti died in December 1894, predeceased by her sister, Maria Francesca Rossetti (1876) and her brother, Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1882). First published in 1881, this Memorial Edition of Called to Be Saints was printed with a Dedication from Christina's other brother, William Michael Rossetti: "In Hope of Our Re-union, to the Dear and Gracious Memory of My Sister." With an epigraph on the Calendar, from Hooker's Ecclesiastical Polity, describing Saints' Days as "the splendour and outward dignity of our religion, forcible witnesses of ancient truth, provocations to the exercise of all piety, shadows of our endless felicity in heaven, on earth everlasting records and memorials."
In the introductory Key to My Book, the author states that "I will endeavour to write of the nineteen saints commemorated by name in our Book of Common Prayer." Beginning with "St. Andrew / Apostle / 30 November" and concluding with "All Saints / 1 November," the devotions for each Saint are composed of four or more parts: 1. The Sacred Text, 2. Biographical Additions, 3. A Prayer, 4. The Memorial. Printed on laid, watermarked paper, the text is enclosed in a ruled black frame and ornamented with engraved initials, head and tailpieces, and vignettes. Printed at Oxford by Horace Hart, Printer to the University and bound with publisher's catalogue.
