"COME HITHER, BROTHER WOLF; I COMMAND THEE IN THE NAME OF CHRIST"
Fine Press edition of Saint Francis and the Fierce Wolf of Gubbio—a legend from The Little Flowers printed in an edition of only 50 copies. A beautiful copy, complete as issued with the scarce original dust wrapper.
Taken from the Little Flowers of Saint Francis, "a collection of anecdotes, mostly very brief, concerning Saint Francis and the first generation of Franciscans. It is not an academic biography of the saint or a history of the early years of the Order which he founded, for there is no historical truth in it" (Frank N. Magill). The legend of the Wolf of Gubbio lends a "vivid and convincing impression...of the most Christlike of saints" (Frank N. Magill). The frontispiece illustration of Brother Wolf and Saint Francis—separately printed and then mounted on the page—was signed by Helen Habberstad, an artist who was known for her landscapes and printmaking. The book was handset and printed in red-and-black with a decorated initial by A.W. Rushmore at his Golden Hind Press. Frank N. Magill. Masterpieces of Christian Literature.
