The English Hymnal

London: Geoffrey Cumberlege/Oxford University Press, [1953]. 24mo. (5 5/8 inches tall), contemporary full caramel brown calf, central gilt monogram, gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Fine.

"THE ENGLISH HYMNAL IS A COLLECTION OF THE BEST HYMNS IN THE LANGUAGE"

Mid-century edition of the lyrics of The English Hymnal—including hymns by G.K. Chesterton ("Good Christian Men, Rejoice")

Finely bound by Bayntun Riviere of Bath in gilt monogrammed calf with a matching leaf inserted for presentation to: "Wendy Campbell Voullaire / Combe Sydenham Hall / Somerset." A beautiful copy.

First published in 1906, supervised by Percy Dearmer (General Editor) and Ralph Vaughn Williams (Music Editor), the English Hymnal was meant as a companion to the Book of Common Prayer. A short Preface (with Explanatory Notes and Acknowledgments) explains this volume as "an attempt to combine in one volume the worthiest expressions of all that lies within the Christian Creed, from those 'ancient Fathers' who were the earliest hymn writers down to contemporary exponents of modern aspirations and ideals."

Printed on thin India paper, this small handbook (described on the title page as a "Long Primer 24mo.") consists of 12 sections of lyrics, numbered 1 - 744: Part I. The Christian Year, Part II. Saints Days and Other Holy Days, Part III. Times and Seasons, Part IV. Sacraments and Other Rites, Part V. General Hymns, Part VI. Special Occasions, Part VII. Church and People, Part VIII. Mission Services, Part IX. At Catechism, Part X. Processional, Part XI. Litanies, etc., Part XII. Introits, etc. With an Index of Original First Lines of Translated Hymns (mostly Greek and Latin) and an Index of First Lines for Parts I-XI. Printed in Great Britain at the University Press Oxford by Charles Baty, Printer to the University. Item #1621
