"WHEN JESUS HAD ENDED THESE SAYINGS, THE PEOPLE WERE ASTONISHED"

Fine Press signed limited edition of the Sermon on the Mount—"a perfect standard of the Christian life" (Augustine)—designed, hand-illuminated, and signed by Valenti Angelo. Complete in the original foil-covered slipcase.

Derived from three chapters in the Gospel of Matthew, the Beatitudes and the Sermon on the Mount are regarded as the simplest expression of the highest ideals of Christian discipleship. "If anyone will piously and soberly consider the sermon which our Lord Jesus Christ spoke on the mount, as we read it in the Gospel according to Matthew, I think that he will find in it, so far as regards the highest morals, a perfect standard of the Christian life" (Augustine of Hippo). For Valenti Angelo, Jesus' longest sermon was a favorite text, one to which he would return to again and again. Angelo's spare and typically graceful rendering focuses the reader on the actual words of Jesus. The lines of text are ornamented only with colored initials and pilcrows. One of only 110 copies printed in December 1935 by Edmund B. Thompson at Hawthorn House and signed by Angelo in pencil on the colophon.
