First published in 1953, Ethics is "a phenomenological defense of the objectivity and supremacy of moral values as an alternative to eudaemonism. For a deductive ethics based on the importance of the means-end relation, there is substituted an intuited and self-intelligible 'due relation' between moral values and the proper response of the person to them. This book contains matter of significance on the philosophy of value, freedom of the will, and the importance of and spirituality of many non-volitional affective responses. The distinctive character of Christian ethics is underlined" (George F. McLean).
Modeled on the traditional ethics textbooks, the book is composed of two sections (of which the first part is general ethics). Part One: I. Value and Motivation, II. The Reality of Value against Its Detractors, III. Fundamental Aspects of the Sphere of Values. Part Two: I. The Value of Morality, II.Freedom, III. The Sources of Moral Goodness, IV. Roots of Moral Evil, V. Conclusion. Hildebrand concludes with a quote from St. Augustine ("the Father of Christian Ethics"): "Though of himself man fell, of himself he cannot rise. But outstretched to us from above is God's right hand, our Lord Jesus Christ." This edition features a brief Preface acknowledging the collaboration of Robert C.
