"WHAT IS IT TO THE SUSSEX SHORE / THAT ALFRED'S BONES LIE HIDDEN THERE?"

Small press edition of a poem by Eric Gill—printed posthumously and illustrated with a redrawn version of Gill's own St. Thomas' Hands (1926).

Written on a train to Ditchling in August 1921, Gill's poem was originally published in The Game (March 1922), the "occasional magazine" published by S. Dominic's Press. Printed by San Francisco's Black Vine Press (as a Keepsake for a joint meeting of the Zamarano Club and the Roxburghe Club), this printing is illustrated with Gill's St. Thomas' Hands, based on P382, and "designed for use on the title-pages of books containing Gill's writings." The original manuscript is now in the Gleeson Library at the University of San Francisco. Evan R. Gill. Bibliography of Eric Gill, 11, 69(v); Christopher Skelton. Eric Gill: The Engravings, P382.
