ST. BARTHOLOMEW'S CHURCH IN THE CITY OF NEW YORK
Mid-century edition of this architectural guide to Saint Bartholomew's Church on Park Avenue in the City of New York. The illustrated front wrapper depicts St. Bartholomew, standing in front of a cityscape and holding a model of the church with a shield bearing a flaying knife.
First established in 1835, St. Bartholomew's Church has moved locations twice "and its roots stretch deep into the life of the City of New York." St. Bartholomew's embodies "a tradition of liberal Christianity...in its ministry to the religious, civic, and social needs of the times." The current church was begun by the architect Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue and completed in 1930. This handbook consists of a Foreword and A Brief History of the Parish, followed by four sections on the architecture: 1). Exterior, 2). Interior, 3). The Chapel, 4). The Community House. Supplemented with an Appendix ("A Plan for Stained Glass WIndows") and a Form of Bequest. The final leaf provides a listing of the Rector, Vestry, and Junior Vestry (updated to 1949). Designed and printed by the Wickersham Press and first published in 1941, the book is illustrated with a captioned frontispiece and 11 black-and-white photographic plates by Samuel H. Gottscho, each tipped to the page. The front wrapper illustration reproduces the distinctive American Numismatic Society medals struck when the cornerstone of the new St. Bartholomew's Church was laid on Park Avenue in May 1917.
