"IF IT PLEASES YOU, SAY YOU A PRAYER FOR THEIR SOULS, FOR THAT WELL PLEASES THEM"

Limited edition of The Old Book—one of only 1350 copies printed—a window into the pageantry of our medieval ancestors, edited and illustrated by Dorothy Hartley.

The text is preceded by Hartley's own Proem and An Introduction by George Saintsbury: "One might warn the reader...and discuss with him why the collector has sometimes assigned authorship and sometimes left things to enrich the wallet of that wonderful proprietor Mr. Anon." The proem finds Hartley in a vast company of ghosts departing for a pilgrimage "with their bundles alongside. A roping of lore, a handfull of learning, a song or a toy, just something they loved or believed in or feared or hated, something they had brought for your liking. If it pleases you, say you a prayer for their souls, for that well pleases them."

Part One. Of the Land, Part Two. Of the People, Part Three. Of the Household, Part Four. Of Travellers' Tales, Part Five. Of Doctors and Science, Part Six. Of Beasts, Part Seven. Of Fears and Ghosts, Part Eight. Of Curses and Prayers. With an Index. Illustrated with a frontispiece and three additional color plates, illuminated endpapers, 11 plates in black-and-white, and numerous vignettes throughout the text. Printed on Japon de Luxe paper and numbered in ink on the limitation page, this edition (published during the brief time Alfred A. Knopf maintained offices in London) consisted of 500 copies for sale in America and 750 copies in England.
