"TO WIN SOULS FOR CHRIST IS THE VOCATION OF EVERY CATHOLIC"
First edition of this "practical solution" for lay Catholics by "a pioneer in American Catholic social thought" (Werner). A beautiful copy.
Born in Milwaukee to German immigrant parents, Joseph Husslein joined the Society of Jesus in 1891 and embarked on a mission of service to the largely immigrant American Church. He was determined to instill the social teachings of Pope Leo XIII's Rerum Novarum (1891) and Pope Pius XI's Quadragesimo Anno (1931) in an industrialized society contending with the idol of modern materialism. The Catholic's Work in the World was published while Husslein was busy teaching at Fordham University, completing a PhD in Sociology, and serving as Associate Editor at America magazine. "Joseph Husslein lived at his desk. He spent most of his waking hours with his pencils, carbon paper, and typewriter. Yet this quiet man, with no close friends, was driven by a vision that only the teachings of Christ could bring justice to humanity. From behind his desk, as he labored to explain, promote, and develop Christian teaching, Joseph Husslein tried to change the world" (Stephen A. Werner). With an extensive publisher's catalogue bound at the rear of the text. Approbations. Stephen A. Werner. The Significance of Joseph Husslein, S.J.
