The Unity of Philosophical Experience

New York: Scribner's, 1937. First edition. Octavo, original steel gray cloth, original dust jacket. About Fine. Item #1407

"IT IS THE PROPER AIM AND SCOPE OF THE PRESENT BOOK TO SHOW THAT THE HISTORY OF PHILOSPHY MAKES PHILOSOPHICAL SENSE"

First edition of Etienne Gilson's important survey of philosophy—ranging across a thousand years to encompass the history of thought. A handsome copy.

Originating with Gilson's delivery of the William James lectures at Harvard University in 1936-1937, the book is "a study of the main directions of modern philosophic thought, exemplifying its coherence. Philosophy is traced from the late medieval, through the Cartesian, to the Kantian period. Lesser thinkers are studied in their subordinate relation to the key philosophers in each age, and the varied approaches to being are woven into an ordered pattern. It concludes with a reflection on the unity of development in the history of philosophy" (George McLean).

Composed of four sections: Part I. The Medieval Experiment, Part II. The Cartesian Experiment, Part III. The Modern Experiment, Part IV. The Nature and Unity of Philosophical Experience. With Gilson's short Foreword, dated "Institute of Medieval Studies / Toronto, Canada / 22nd November, 1937" and a Dedication: "To My Wife / E.G." The Unity of Philosophical Experience is regarded as one of Gilson's best books, containing "original insights into the meaning of the history of philosophy for philosophy itself and...not limited to mere Thomistic comment." (Robert Royal). Approbations. McLean, An Annotated Bibliography of Philosophy in Catholic Thought,17; Robert Royal. A Deeper Vision: The Catholic Intellectual Tradition in the Twentieth Century.
