"A MAYOR GLORIA DE DIOS Y A MAYOR GLORIA DE SU MADRE IMMACULADA MARIA"

Uncommon guidebook for pilgrims to the 1931 Holy Week festival in Sevilla, Spain—abundantly illustrated throughout and scarce in the original wrappers decorated in blue. Scarce.

Published annually from 1921 to 1936, Sevilla y la Semana Santa was popular with tourists and pilgrims during the interwar years. The main section profiles the 'Nazarenos' of the numerous 'Cofradias' (or 'Hermandades'), the traditional lay brotherhoods who conducted ten days of penitential processions with elaborate "Pasos' (floats) in the streets around the enormous sixteenth century cathedral. Illustrated with more than 20 color-printed plates depicting the Nazarenos in their vivid 'Capirote'—the traditional tall, pointed hood that covers the face entirely except for two eye holes.

Printed in March 1931, this edition includes a brief preface by Gómez Millán along with dozens of advertisements for commercial establishments in the city. Includes two valuable essays: I. El Retablo Sevillano en el Siglo XVII (Jose Diaz Hernandez) tracing the history and influence of the Sevillian school of Baroque devotional art, and II. El Arte en las Cofraidias Sevillanas (Heliodoro Sancho Corbacho). The color portraits of the Nazarenos are joined with dramatic black-and-white photographs by M. Murga. In April 1957, the poet Roy Campbell (a 1935 convert to Catholicism) left Holy Week observances in Sevilla to return home to Portugal when he was killed in a car accident.
