"CHRIST INVITES US TO A BANQUET PROVIDED FOR HIS FRIENDS, A SACRED BANQUET OF WHICH HE IS THE GIVER"

"Getting Ready for Communion"—number 4 from the uncommon "John Bull Tracts"—in preparation for the Eucharist.

The John Bull Tracts were a charming series of penny pamphlets meant to provide inexpensive instruction for the ordinary parishioner in the pews. Published by the Society of SS. Peter and Paul for the Catholic Literature Association of the Anglo-Catholic Congress (under the supervision of editors, Rev. K.D. Mackenzie and Rev. G.D. Rosenthal). The 8 pages of text are illustrated with a headpiece sketch, initaled "AAW" and captioned: "So disrespectful was this towards the King, that he had to be turned out." The front and back wrappers feature a woodcut illustration depicting John Bull, pondering a devotional text as he ascends from the dark valley of "Error" up into the sunlight of "Truth." Printed in 1925 and 1926, the first series ("first million") and second series ("second million") each consisted of sixteen numbers.
