"WE CATHOLICS WANT OUR NON-CATHOLIC FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS TO KNOW US AS WE REALLY ARE"

Knights of Columbus pamphlet presenting the Catholic perspective on a whole range of post-war issues. Sponsored by the Religious Information Bureau of the Knights of Columbus,

Founded in 1882 by (now Blessed) Father Michael McGivney in New Haven, Connecticut, the Knights of Columbus was originally intended to serve as a mutual aid society to provide financial assistance to Catholic widows and orphans. The organization developed as a fraternal society and sought to aid its members in navigating the social, cultural, and political issues arising in Catholic assimilation. Illustrated throughout, this booklet includes a couple dozen statements confirming (or dispelling rumors on) Catholic positions prevalent in modern America. The first, and perhaps most important, essay addresses the persistent issue of the Catholic views on Church and State, "Do Catholics Want to Rule America?" reprints statements by three American archbishops and includes a quote by John Courtney Murray about America's status as a "lay state," the United States "retains proper authority over the lay life of its citizens...but it has no authority over their religious lives." Approbations.
