"THE CHURCHES OF THE EAST AND THE WEST HAVE AN AFFINITY BETWEEN THEM THAT GOES MUCH DEEPER THAN THEIR ESTRANGEMENT"

First edition in English of Yves Congar's history of the "Oriental Schism" between Rome and Constantinople—marking the Dominican theologian's re-emergence after his ability to publish and teach was restricted during the late 1940s and 50s.

Early on as a young priest, Congar began "to explore the problem of ecumenicism, a topic that would occupy his attention for the rest of his career. Congar was always concerned with overcoming the divisions in the Body of Christ. This earned him criticism from conservatives in the church who preferred to consider Protestants as schismatics rather than as 'separated brethren'" (Robert Ellsberg). The text consists of five sections: I. The Centuries-Old Estrangement of the Eastern and Western Churches, II. Political Factors contributing to the Estrangement, III. Cultural Factors contributing to the Estrangement, IV. Ecclesiological Factors contributing to the Estrangement, V. Conclusions: The Lessons of History. Translated at Fordham University's Russian Center with a brief Preface by Paul Mailleux, S.J. mentioning Pope John XXIII's announcement in January 1959 of an "Ecumenical Council, which would be 'an invitation to the separated Christian Communities to find unity." Approbations. Robert Ellsberg, All Saints: Daily Reflections on Saints, Prophets, and Witnesses for Our Time.
