"NO NATION HAS SO UNANIMOUSLY CHOSEN ONE OF ITS SONS AS ITS REPRESENTATIVE IN ART AS GERMANY—PROTESTANT AND CATHOLIC, NORTH AND SOUTH—HAS CHOSEN DÜRER" (WILL DURANT)

Privately-printed catalogue raisonne of Albrecht Dürer's woodcuts—in the original burlap boards with Dürer's 'AD' monogram to the front board. A comprehensive collection of bold quarto plates in the striking original binding.

Illustrated with a title page vignette ("Dürer House at Nuremberg"), this edition is divided into two sections. The annotated catalogue, edited by Dr. Willi Kurth and translated by Silvia M. Welsh, is prefaced with a chronological Index (placed at the front) and a table: List according to Bartsch and Passavant. Kurth's guide to the plates discusses the evidence and controversies surrounding the authenticity of each work, citing the opinions of all the important Dürer scholars and furnishing the reader with the biographical and historical background of Dürer's work. The plates collect the woodcuts produced between 1488 and 1527: The Years of Apprenticeship at Nuremberg (1486 - 1490), The Years of Travel (1490 - 1494), The First Italian Journey and the Years (1495 - 1500) at Nuremberg, The Life of the Virgin and minor works of the period (1500 - 1505), The Classical Period of the woodcut (1509 - 1512), Dürer's Work in the service of the Emperor Maximilian and other works (1512 - 1518). First published in 1927 in two editions: Foyle (London) and Arden (New York). The catalogue notes cite dates in the mid-1940's. Wolfgang M. Freitage.
