"THIS BOOK WILL BE ABOUT REVELATION, ABOUT THE COMMUNITY GOD HAS ESTABLISHED, AND ABOUT THE SACRAMENTS THAT CONSTITUTE IT"

First American edition of the English Dominican's engaging essays on the Sacramental Life of the Church.

Father McCabe's short Introduction (dated, "Herbert McCabe / Martha's Vineyard / July 1963") conveys the cumulative nature of these essays: "Although conceived as a unity, the book was not written in one sitting, but was gradually produced in the form of lectures to a variety of audiences. Most of the chapters have grown out of discussions with students and others at various English universities and at conferences of the Union of Catholic Students."

These 10 chapters seek a sacramental revival: "We can no longer treat the sacraments, as Catholic writers have sometimes done in the past, as 'aids' to the spiritual life which the Church is fortunately able to dispense to her children, we must return to the classical tradition in which they are seen as our living contact with the humanity of Christ through which alone we share in divine life." Jacket design by Victor Lazzaro. Published in England as The New Creation. Approbations.
