"I LAY THEE THUS, ALL WARM AND SOFT AND LOVELY, IN GOD'S STRONG ARMS"
Scarce first edition of this collection of sweet prayers by a father for his baby son—still quite charming in the silver-and-red-stamped original binding.
A longtime Quaker missionary in India, Jack Hoyland was also a prolific author. Published shortly after his return from India, Hoyland's prayers evoke the gentle domestic rhythms of everyday family life. The prayers are untitled but each begins with an oversized initial printed in red. Printed on good laid paper and Illustrated with a photographic frontispiece, decorated title page (recreated on the front board), and a colophon ("good night"). Published by W. Heffer and Son of Cambridge; also issued perfect-bound with an illustrated paper wrapper. Prayers for a One-Year-Old was popular enough to warrant a second volume: Prayers for a Two-Year Old (1929). Uncommon and now scarce in this overall condition.
