"THE KERNEL OF OUR LORD'S TEACHING" Fine illustrated edition of the Sermon on the Mount—"the greatest passage of literature in our language." Derived from three chapters in the Gospel of Matthew, the Beatitudes and the Sermon on the Mount are regarded as the simplest expression of the highest ideals of Christian discipleship. "If anyone will piously and soberly consider the sermon which our Lord Jesus Christ spoke on the Mount, as we read it in the Gospel according to Matthew, I think that he will find in it, so far as regards the highest morals, a perfect standard of the Christian life" (Augustine of Hippo). This edition was illustrated throughout by Horace Knowles with a frontispiece and 11 dramatic black-and-white plates, in addition to an opening vignette in black and historiated initials printed in red. This follow-up to For a Little Child Like Me (1934) was a preview of Knowles's work, utilized to great effect in an illustrated edition of the King James Bible.(1952). "Made and printed in Great Britain by C. Tinling & Co. Ltd., Liverpool, London, and Prescot."
